Description

Every Edit Visible. Every Change Yours to Accept or Reject.

The Manuscript Editor Pro is a Claude Cowork plugin that edits your finished fiction manuscript and delivers every single change as a tracked revision in your .docx file. Open it in Word or Google Docs, see exactly what was changed and why, and accept or reject each edit individually. You’re always in control.

No more blind rewrites where you have to trust the tool didn’t wreck your voice. No more paying $2,000+ for a single round of professional editing. No more manuscripts with robotic transitions, clinical emotion descriptions, and every character sounding the same. This plugin finds prose-level problems, fixes them with your approval on every change, scrubs AI artifacts, catches every inconsistency, and builds you a series bible — then tells you exactly what it did in a comprehensive editorial report.

What’s New in Version 2

Version 2 is a complete redesign based on author feedback:

  • Track Changes on every edit. Every prose change (Line Edit and Proofread) appears as a tracked revision in your .docx. Open in Word or Google Docs, see red strikethrough for deletions and colored underline for insertions. Accept or reject each one.
  • Developmental Assessment is advisory only. It produces an editorial letter identifying structural issues with suggested approaches — but it never touches your prose. No automatic rewrites. No added content. No altered scenes. You decide what to change.
  • You choose which passes to run. Full pipeline, line edit + proofread only, proofread only, or any custom combination. Not every manuscript needs every pass.
  • Voice Profile built before any editing. The plugin analyzes your sentence rhythms, vocabulary, metaphor preferences, dialogue style, and humor register — then tests every replacement against your voice.

How It Works

Up to four editing stages. You pick which ones to run:

  1. Developmental Assessment — Structural analysis report with issues and suggestions. Advisory only — never touches your prose.
  2. Line Edit (Track Changes) — AI artifact scrubbing, show-vs-tell, crutch phrases, dialogue, prose quality. Every change is a tracked revision you accept or reject.
  3. Proofread (Track Changes) — Grammar, punctuation, spelling, consistency. Surgical fixes as tracked revisions.
  4. Continuity Audit — Character bible, timeline, geography, world rules. Contradictions fixed with tracked changes + comments explaining the choice.

Each editing pass uses a two-model loop: Sonnet identifies every issue with analytical precision → Opus fixes them with high-quality prose that matches your voice → Sonnet verifies fixes landed correctly with no regressions. Every issue gets found, fixed, and confirmed.

Developmental Assessment (Advisory Only)

The big-picture structural analysis — delivered as an editorial letter, exactly like you’d get from a traditional developmental editor.

  • Story Structure & Pacing — Are major plot points properly placed? Does any section drag or rush? Is the opening strong enough?
  • Plot & Conflict — Plot holes, logic gaps, unresolved threads, stakes escalation, tension maintenance
  • Character Development — Motivation, agency, earned arcs, protagonist activity vs. passivity
  • Point of View & Voice — POV consistency, head-hopping, voice strength, tense consistency
  • Worldbuilding & Setting — Info-dumps, rule consistency, grounded specificity
  • Genre Conventions — Does the manuscript deliver on its genre’s reader contract?

Every issue includes a suggested approach — not an automatic rewrite. You read the assessment and decide what to act on. Your creative decisions stay yours.

Line Edit (Track Changes)

The prose-level pass. This is where “AI-sounding” becomes “author-sounding” — and you approve every single change.

  • AI Artifact Scrubbing — Robotic transitions (“Furthermore,” “Additionally”), clinical emotion descriptions (“she felt a wave of sadness”), hedging language (“seemed to,” “couldn’t help but”), meta-commentary, therapy-speak in dialogue
  • Show vs. Tell Conversion — Emotions named instead of shown, exposition blocks, summary where scene should be. Every instance converted to lived, experiential prose — as a tracked change you can review.
  • Crutch Phrase Tracking — 12+ common AI patterns counted, logged, and addressed when over threshold. Before-and-after counts in the editorial report.
  • Dialogue Distinctiveness — Can you tell who’s talking without the tags? Characters get distinct vocabulary, speech patterns, and subtext.
  • Prose Mechanics — Weak verbs, passive voice clusters, filter words, purple prose, redundancy, dead metaphors
  • Intimate Scene Review — For any heat level. Emotional authenticity, show-vs-tell, pacing, cliché purge, physical realism, emotional closure.
  • Chapter Endings — Philosophical wrap-ups and manufactured cliffhangers replaced with forward momentum.

Every change appears as a tracked revision in your .docx. Non-obvious changes include editor comments explaining the reasoning.

Proofread (Track Changes)

The final polish. Surgical precision — no rewriting, no voice changes. Every correction is a tracked revision.

  • Grammar & Syntax — Subject-verb agreement, dangling modifiers, comma splices, run-ons, tense shifts
  • Punctuation — Dialogue punctuation, em-dash consistency, Oxford comma consistency, semicolons
  • Spelling & Word Choice — Homophones (their/there/they’re, its/it’s, lay/lie), commonly confused words, character name consistency
  • Consistency Tracking — Character details, location descriptions, timeline/chronology, world rules, formatting conventions
  • Final Read-Through — Flow, rhythm, reader experience. Anything that makes you stumble.

Continuity Audit

A systematic sweep that builds master reference tables and cross-checks every detail against them. Contradictions fixed with tracked changes and comments explaining the standardization choice.

  • Character Bible — Every named character: eye color, hair, age, height, distinguishing features, occupation, personality. Flags any detail that changes between chapters.
  • Relationship Tracker — How and when characters meet, how relationships evolve, terms of address. Catches characters who already know things before they’ve been told.
  • Location & Geography — Every named location with description, spatial relationships, travel times. Flags locations that move, rooms that change layout.
  • Timeline & Chronology — Day-by-day event tracking. Characters in two places at once, impossible travel times, season contradictions.
  • World Rules & Systems — Magic systems, social rules, technology. Rules that contradict themselves, abilities that appear or disappear.
  • Object & Detail Tracking — Important objects, who knows what, dropped plot threads, Chekhov’s gun violations.

The completed reference tables become part of your Editorial Report — usable as a series bible for future books.

Voice Preservation

Before any changes are made, the plugin analyzes your manuscript and builds a Voice Profile — capturing your sentence rhythms, vocabulary range, metaphor preferences, dialogue style, humor register, and description density.

Every replacement is tested against that profile. The goal is invisible editing — the reader should not be able to tell where your prose ends and the editor’s begins. And because every change is a tracked revision, you can reject anything that doesn’t sound like you.

What You Get Per Book

  • Edited Manuscript with Track Changes (.docx) — Your manuscript with every Line Edit and Proofread change visible as a tracked revision. Open in Word/Google Docs, review each change, accept or reject individually.
  • Developmental Assessment (.docx) — Structural analysis with issues and suggested approaches (if dev assessment was run). Advisory only — no prose changes.
  • Editorial Report (.docx) — Executive summary, track changes summary with counts by category, AI artifact audit, crutch phrase frequency table, show-vs-tell examples, intimate scene review notes, voice profile and consistency assessment, and personalized recommendations for your future writing.
  • Continuity Audit (.docx) — Full character bible, relationship tracker, location map, timeline reconstruction, and world rules summary (if continuity audit was run). Usable as a series bible.

Works With Any Fiction Genre

What’s Inside the Plugin

6 reference documents totaling 70KB of fiction editing craft knowledge:

  • Developmental Assessment Checklist — Complete structural evaluation framework with 10 assessment areas, genre-specific criteria, and severity classification. Advisory only — produces suggestions, never rewrites.
  • Line Edit Checklist — AI artifact patterns, crutch phrase database, show-vs-tell conversion guide, dialogue distinctiveness tests, intimate scene review framework, prose mechanics audit
  • Proofread Checklist — Grammar rules, punctuation standards, homophone database, consistency tracking, formatting standards
  • Continuity Audit Framework — Character bible, relationship tracker, geography mapping, timeline reconstruction, world rules enforcement, object tracking
  • Editorial Report Template — Structured report with Track Changes summaries, quantitative audits, and author recommendations
  • Voice Matching Guide — How to analyze and preserve an author’s unique voice across all editing passes

The Math

A freelance developmental edit costs $500–2,000. Line editing adds $500–1,500. Proofreading is $300–800. That’s $1,300–4,300 for a single manuscript.

This plugin does all passes on every manuscript you write, forever, for a one-time purchase. One novella and it’s already paid for itself. An author publishing 4–6 books a year would spend $5,000–25,000 on professional editing. This costs less than the cheapest proofread alone.
