Description

Your Romance and Suspense Deserve to Need Each Other

The Romantic Suspense Outline Builder is a Claude plugin that builds complete, market-informed romantic suspense outlines with a 5-rule guardrail system enforced at every structural decision. It prevents AI’s #1 failure in romantic suspense: writing the romance and the suspense as two separate stories that happen to share a book.

The Genre Problem

When AI writes romantic suspense, it builds two parallel plotlines — a thriller and a love story — that run side by side without affecting each other. The characters pause the investigation to have a date scene. Then they pause the relationship to chase the villain. The romance could be deleted without changing the suspense. The suspense could be deleted without changing the romance. That’s not romantic suspense — that’s a thriller and a romance stapled together.

The Threat-Bond Interlock System

This plugin embeds a 5-rule guardrail that enforces causal linkage between romance and suspense at every structural decision — not generic writing advice, but targeted checks against the specific way AI fails at romantic suspense:

  1. Causal Crossover: Every major romance beat must create a suspense consequence. Every major suspense beat must create a romantic consequence. The kiss that reveals their location. The interrogation that forces vulnerability. If either thread can be deleted without affecting the other, the interlock has failed.
  2. Vulnerability Escalation: As the romance deepens, each character’s exposure to the threat increases. Love creates liability. The person they care about becomes the thing the antagonist can exploit. Vulnerability must trend upward chapter by chapter.
  3. Trust Under Pressure: Trust between the romantic leads must be tested by the suspense plot, not just the relationship plot. Secrets kept for protection. Information shared under duress. Trust earned through high-stakes action, not just emotional conversation.
  4. Antagonist Awareness: The antagonist must recognize and exploit the romantic connection. The villain doesn’t exist in a vacuum — they adapt. They weaponize the bond, use one character against the other. If the antagonist ignores the romance, the interlock is broken.
  5. Clock Compression: The suspense timeline compresses the romance timeline. These characters don’t have months for a slow burn. The threat forces accelerated intimacy — which creates its own complications. Is this real or just adrenaline? Do they actually know each other?

Suspense Subtypes

  • Romantic Thriller: High-octane action, global/organizational threat, fast pacing
  • Romantic Mystery: Whodunit element, investigation-driven, slower burn suspense
  • Bodyguard/Protector: Forced proximity, professional boundaries, one protects the other
  • Undercover/Hidden Identity: One character hides who they are — trust is the central axis
  • Witness Protection/On the Run: Forced proximity through flight, isolation amplifies both threads
  • Small Town Suspense: Community-based threat, everyone’s a suspect, slower burn romance
  • Psychological Suspense: Gaslighting, unreliable narrator — the threat might be the love interest
  • Military/Law Enforcement: Professional stakes layer onto personal, chain of command tension

Interlock Tags (Per Chapter)

Every chapter in the outline is tagged with four tracking systems so you can see the interlock working:

  • Interlock Tags: romance→suspense | suspense→romance | dual-engine | convergence
  • Trust Tags: withheld | tested | earned | broken | rebuilt
  • Vulnerability Tags: low | rising | exposed | weaponized | accepted
  • Clock Tags: ticking | compressed | frozen | zero

Genre Pillars

  • Causal Linkage: Romance and suspense must cause consequences in each other — not just coexist, but interlock so that removing either thread collapses the story
  • Escalating Vulnerability: Falling in love in a dangerous situation means love itself becomes dangerous — the deeper the bond, the higher the stakes
