Description

Your AI Writes Jump Scares, Not Horror. There’s a Difference.

The Horror Outline Builder is an interactive AI skill for Claude Desktop that asks what you want — subgenre, fear type, protagonist vulnerability, threat reveal pacing, tone, ending — then builds a complete, publishable horror outline with a threat bible, setting-as-character document, fear architecture map, information rationing plan, and chapter-by-chapter dread tracking.

No more monsters that are fully explained by the midpoint. No more protagonists who are too capable to be afraid. No more safe spaces that never get violated. No more scares that resolve in a paragraph. This skill builds outlines where the dread is SUSTAINED — because you control the information, the safety, and the hope.

How It Works

Step 1: Answer 12 setup questions.

  1. Subgenre — Psychological, Cosmic, Supernatural, Gothic, Haunted Place, Folk Horror, Creature Feature, Body Horror, Slasher/Survival, Possession/Demonic, Apocalyptic, Quiet/Literary
  2. Primary Fear Type — Dread, disgust, paranoia, existential terror, isolation, or violation
  3. Audience — Adult (no restrictions), New Adult (18-25), Young Adult (14-18), or Middle Grade (10-13). Content boundaries enforced automatically.
  4. Horror Intensity — Atmospheric/creeping (implied, reader’s imagination), Moderate (on-page but not lingering), Intense/graphic (unflinching, detailed), or Extreme (splatterpunk, no limits). Audience-locked: MG = atmospheric only, YA = atmospheric or moderate.
  5. Body Horror Elements — None, light (teeth falling out, something under the skin), moderate (transformation, infection), or heavy (Cronenberg territory). Can be added to ANY subgenre — folk horror with body horror, psychological horror with infection, cosmic horror with transformation.
  6. Protagonist Vulnerability — Physical limitation, psychological vulnerability, social isolation, knowledge gap, trapped, or emotional bond
  7. Threat Reveal Pacing — Slow reveal, monster-in-the-house, dramatic irony, or unreliable reality
  8. Tone — Relentless, slow burn with eruptions, dark humor + horror, literary/atmospheric, or raw/visceral
  9. Ending Type — Dark, pyrrhic victory, ambiguous, earned survival, or twist revelation
  10. Romance — None, relationship under threat, romance subplot, or the relationship IS the horror
  11. Series Position — Standalone, Book 1, interconnected standalone, or continuation
  12. Length — Novella (20-35k), standard (55-80k), or extended (85-110k)

Step 2: The skill builds your outline across 13 interactive steps with approval at every stage.

What the Outline Includes

  1. Story Concept & Pitch — hook, the “dread line,” comp titles, core fear
  2. Protagonist Bio — 16 fields including vulnerability, trauma, coping mechanism, blind spot, and breaking point
  3. Threat Bible — what it is (surface), what it actually is (truth), its rules, its signature sensory detail, escalation stages, reveal timeline, and what the reader NEVER learns
  4. Setting-As-Character — normal version vs. wrong version, 5-8 specific spaces, the safe space (and when it breaks), the trap
  5. Fear Architecture Map — baseline, first wrongness, 5-8 dread escalation beats, false safety points, point of no return, peak horror, the cost
  6. Supporting Cast — each with horror function (skeptic, first victim, false ally), vulnerability, and when they die/break
  7. Information Rationing Plan — clue release schedule, red herrings, misleading expert, truth release points, what stays hidden
  8. Chapter Outline — 14 fields per chapter including dread level (1-10), threat presence level, protagonist deterioration state, safe space status, and sensory anchor
  9. Content Warnings — complete CW document
  10. Series Seeds — the larger horror, the mythology, the survivor’s damage
